Driveway Surfaces

There are a number of materials we can use for driveways, all of which you can learn more about below. We also have the top three surface materials that are always worth considering.

New Asphalt Driveway

We provide high-quality new asphalt driveways for any property. Like with any construction, the surface must have good load-bearing. We, therefore, recommend a total thickness of sub-base and asphalt of 280-300mm. We can send a member of our team to assess your requirements and advise on the specifications to ensure your new drive is perfect.

Repairing Driveways, Edges and Drainage Systems

If there are cracks on your surface, we can apply a special membrane with a hot bitumen to cover them. Once the membrane is covered, it remains flexible and prevents cracks from reopening. We then apply adhesive to form a strong bond between the old and new surface.

If the asphalt surface has been damaged or deteriorated beyond repair, we can professionally remove all or part of the base and surface course and relay the new surface. As professional drainage providers, we can also complete full repairs on your drainage systems.

Resin Bound Driveways

Resin-bound driveways consist of a mixture of aggregate stones and resin and is favoured for being a flexible surfacing material that is durable and resistant to cracking.

Our sales director can arrange a site visit to advise on the thickness of your resin bound driveway and discuss a suitable form of edging for your boundary which is usually made with concrete, metal or brick.

We start by excavating and compacting the base so that a membrane can be applied. This membrane prevents contamination between the soil and the sub-base. Once the sub-base has been well-compacted, we can apply an open textured base course.

To create the resin bound surfaces, we mix the resin and aggregate together on site in a large rotary paddle mixer and transport it directly to the working area in wheelbarrows. It is then spread to the required thickness and levelled by hand-held steel trowels by our fully trained in-house tradesmen.

Slurry Sealing

Slurry sealing is a thick bitumen or water-based material used for sealing the surface. This is used to prevent the top of the surface becoming loose, or water or ice penetrating the asphalt.

We apply the slurry by hand held rollers and squeegees to form a complete impervious surface, with a curing time of 48 hours. Before applying the slurry sealing, the surface must be clean and may require power washing to remove any loose materials.

There are three colours of slurry sealing to choose from, including red, green and black.

Footways and Paths

We construct footways and paths to a high standard, and ensure there is an adequate sub-base structure and edging to prevent cracking or movement.

There are many materials that can be used to form a footway, including concrete slabs, asphalt, bitmac, anti-slip resin bound aggregates, paving bricks and gravel. We can also provide a resurfacing service on an existing footpath with a fine asphalt, resin, slurry or hot tarmac and gravel dressing.

We can discuss your footpath requirements in detail and arrange an on-site visit to ensure you’re getting the right type of surface. The surface thickness you need will depend on whether your path is being used by pedestrians, cyclists, cars, or even HGVs. Our expert sales advisors can help ensure you’re getting a footpath that not only looks professional, but is built to last.

A&MT can design and draw up the complete construction from excavation to completion.

Surface Dressing

Surface dressing is often used to protect an asphalt surface which has started to crack or form potholes. However, badly damaged your driveway surface, we can reinstate them with a binder course.

We follow one of the cheapest and effective procedures for filling potholes and resurfacing, and we also offer an emergency pothole repair service within 48 hours of your call. We cut around the potholes with a floor saw, clean the base, and then fill the pothole with base course bitmac. The surface is cleaned to remove loose particles before a combination of hot bitumen polymer compound and gravel or granite aggregates are compacted.

Gravel

Gravel is usually used for aesthetics. It is also softer on the eye, especially around older stone buildings or heritage sites. There are many types and colours of gravel that can be used and we have a collection of samples for you to choose from.

Resin Bound Aggregates

Resin bound aggregate is one of the hardest and smoothest surfacing materials on the market. Resin is a very strong and flexible material which offers versatile appearance with many colours available. We can also apply additional materials to form an anti-slip surface if required.

We can arrange a site visit and advise on the thickness of the sub-base and base course. Driveways or footpaths that are pedestrianised usually require a thickness of 10mm, while areas that have traffic will require a minimum of 18mm.
