About Asphalt

Asphalt is a mixture made of carefully selected aggregates bound together with bitumen, forming a strong, resilient surface. A similar mixture to tarmac, but consisting of less external materials, it’s slightly harder wearing and helps reduce traffic noise.

A preferred material for surfacing with the Highways Agency, it’s also the most popular surfacing material across our services, including:

  • Road surfacing
  • Pathway surfacing
  • Playground surfacing
  • Car Park Surfacing
  • & Much More

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between asphalt and tarmac?

Although tarmac and asphalt are very similar, both being made from a mixture of crushed stone (aggregate) and a binder, they are different, particularly in terms of performance. Asphalt features fewer external materials, making it a slightly more hard-wearing choice and better for reducing traffic noise. It’s also more environmentally friendly, being 100% recyclable.

Is asphalt a suitable surface for heavier vehicle traffic?

It is suitable for heavy lorry parks and motorways. The thickness of the surface can be adapted to suit the purpose, so if you require a road surface for either heavier vehicles or where traffic is busy and consistent, this can be arranged. As professional asphalt contractors, we can make sure your surface is fit for purpose.

Does asphalt have a good lifespan?

Yes, when installed and maintained properly, asphalt can last a long time. The exact lifespan depends on the type of surface and how heavily it’s used. For example, a new driveway can typically last 20–25 years or more, while roads carrying heavy traffic often require major work every 15 years or so. With treatments like surface dressing, this can be extended further. Compared to tarmac, asphalt offers a longer lifespan, which is one of the key reasons it’s the preferred choice for UK roads.
